Driver License Compact (DLC) – An Interstate Compact
If you were travelling through another state or visiting another state and arrested for DUI, you can expect your home state to find out about it. Under the Driver License Compact (DLC), member states exchange information concerning license suspensions and traffic violations of non-residents and forward that information to the offender's home state.
The theme of the DLC is One Driver, One License, One Record. Essentially, your home state would treat your DUI offense as if you had committed it at home, thereby applying home state laws to your out-of-state offense. The DLC applies to offenses such as DUI and speeding, but it does not apply to non-moving violations such as parking tickets or tinted windows.
The National Driver Register (NDR) is a computerized database containing information about drivers whose licenses have been suspended or revoked, or who have been convicted of serious traffic violations such as DUI.
State motor vehicle agencies provide the NDR with information from drivers who have been convicted of serious traffic violations. When a driver applies for a driver's license, the state checks the NDR to find out if the person has been reported as a problem driver, and if so, the person may be denied a driver's license. Basically, you can run to another state, but you can't hide!
